What's causing my shoulder pain??
Chronic and repetitive compression or “impingement” of the rotator-cuff tendons in the shoulder causes pain and movement problems known as shoulder impingement syndrome.
Shoulder impingement syndrome may also be referred to as “subacromial” impingement syndrome because tendons, ligaments, and bursa under the acromion can be pinched or compressed.
People who do repetitive or overhead movements such as manual labors or athletes who raise their arms repeatedly overhead are most at risk for developing shoulder impingement.
Poor posture can contribute to shoulder impingement. Several causes of shoulder impingement include; repetitive overhead movement, injury, bony abnormalities, osteoarthritis, poor rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscle strength, thickening of the bursa, ligaments and tightness of the soft tissue around the shoulder joint. If left untreated shoulder impingement can lead to more serious conditions such as a rotator cuff tear.
Symptoms of shoulder impingement include; restricted shoulder motion, weakness in movement patterns, pain with overhead shoulder movements, sleeping on the involved side and pain with throwing or dynamic movement patterns. Physical and Occupational therapy can help decrease pain, improve shoulder range of motion, strength and overall function. Click the link below for further information on shoulder impingement.
