September 21-25, 2020 is Falls Prevention Awareness Week. Falls are a major public health problem. 1 in 4 Americans aged 65+ fall each year. Every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the ER for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are the 2nd leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. Adults older than 65 years of age suffer the greatest number of fatal falls. Falls with or without injury can affect a person’s quality of life. Physical and Occupational Therapy can help improve your balance, strength, endurance, walking abilities, and decrease pain and overall fear of falling.
